Technivorm KBT-741 Moccamaster Polished Silver Coffee Maker 1.25-L. Review

Some years back, I began to use a French press for my coffee each morning. While I could appreciate the greatly improved flavor and richness in my coffee cup, most of my visitors didn’t care for the finest grounds that always seemed to make it to the bottom of the cup. While I did achieve ground-less coffee every now and then, it was very hard to eliminate consistently.

Along comes Technivorm! I found it in a review in a cook’s magazine, and I agree that it comes the closest to producing coffee as rich as coffee from a French press … but without the leavings at the bottom of the cup! Yes, it costs a pretty penny, but after a year of use, I have to say that it’s worth it. The trick, they say, is in the temperature of the water that the Technivorm sends down over the coffee you have ground. Beyond that, the coffeemaker itself has a design unfamiliar to us Americans (though European visitors tell me it’s not uncommon in their area), and the appliance itself is something of a conversation piece.

There are a few minor flaws that I can’t get too worked up about. For one, if you forget you’ve brewed a fresh pot and you don’t get that cap on the carafe fairly quickly, you’ll notice the temperature of your coffee will fall quickly. Secondly, I worry a bit about all of the plastic supporting the filter, so I’m pretty careful when I handle that part of the process.

But what’s most important is the coffee it produces. And it gets 5 stars from me for that! Pay the extra amount, and don’t forget you’re got a fresh pot brewing, and you will be happy!

My DCC-1200 just bit the dust this morning. It lasted 6 years and was used every day except those when we were on vacation, so I’d have to guess 49 weeks of use per year. That’s roughly 2000 pots of coffee and that’s a lot. Not too bad I guess. I agree with some reviewers that the grounds tend to splash up on the lid but that never really bothered me. I never used the timer or any of the feautures really. Just got up every morning and made one full pot. Always used the gold filter as paper filters seem to remove some of the essential oils that give coffee its flavor. I actually think I might get another. Today’s the day to decide as I refuse to pay Dunkin Donuts .06 for another large coffee.

Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto 5-Cup Drip Coffeemaker Review

For a small (4-5 cup) coffeemaker this is mostly perfect. The good is very GOOD: 1) the filter is in the pot, not the maker, so emptying grounds is very clean and easy. I can’t overstate how much this improves the routine in the kitchen (remember dragging the wet filters across the counter to the trash?). 2) the water tank is easily removed and filled at the sink (also a convenience). 3) it has a simple design where you can see everything easily, including the water level and the coffee in the carafe. And 4) it never drips coffee on the hot plate, just water (since the filter and grounds are in the carafe). The BAD: 1) doesn’t have auto turn off that I can tell. 2) doesn’t allow you to grab the pot and pout a cup before it is done brewing (it brews quickly, especially 3 or 4 cups, but still). 3) it’s expensive.
FINAL VERDICT: I’m glad I have it. The “good” things above are really major for anyone making daily coffee. Does it make better coffee than other makers? I don’t see how. But I don’t see how it’s any worse. Tastes great.

Capresso 440.05 MT-500 10-Cup Electronic Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe Review

We’ve had this Capresso model for about a year now. I have no doubt it’s the best coffee maker out there–at least for our needs. We wanted a coffee maker that includes a thermal carafe, programmed start times, and a 10 cup capacity. Of course, it also needs to brew great tasting coffee. It shines on all points. We have it set up next to the sink, and use the spray head on the faucet to fill the water reservoir. The water level indicator makes it very easy to tell when the reservoir is full, and we don’t have to fill the pot and empty it into the reservoir. The coffee is brewed hot, and it stays hot in the carafe. We don’t bother to pre-heat the carafe (as recommended in some reviews) and it’s fine.

There are two reason I give it 4 stars rather than 5. First, the carafe cover could be designed better. We had a couple of overflows until we figured it out. But it wasn’t rocket science. Just make sure the cover is on when you brew, and make sure the little dot embossed in the carafe cover is aligned with the spout when you pour. Second, it is a bit noisy. Capresso made a point of advertising how quiet it is, yet it is much louder than our previous (and cheaper) Capresso coffee maker.

We use the included gold-tone filter rather than paper filters, and after a year we’re finally thinking about replacing it. We’re also doing a thorough cleaning of the whole unit to decalcify it and replace the charcoal filter. We live on top of a limestone gravel pit, so our water is pretty hard.

The price of this unit has been reduced since we purchased it–at least here at Amazon–so it’s a better value now than it was a year ago. If we broke our Capresso, we’d definitely buy another one.

To achieve a spectacular cup of coffee there are essential steps that need to be taken. The water must be free of chlorine taste (hence the charcoal filter), the machine must be able to brew larger or smaller amounts successfully (this one “knows” to disperse hot water more slowly when the coffee ground amount is less). The coffee must be very hot (right around 192 Degrees F, like the brew from the MT500), and kept fresh, as in a double walled stainless steel carafe with a one way valve that keeps flavor and aroma in the coffee. Now it doesn’t hurt if the machine itself is gorgeous either, or that it can output 10 cups of coffee in 8 minutes. Oh and one more thing: this is the only coffee maker in its class that has a stainless steel boiler so your coffee doesn’t ever come in contact with aluminum. Normally this type of construction, and a 1200 watt heating element are found only on commercial grade appliances.

Cuisinart DCC-1200BW Brew Central 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Matte Black Metals Review

My 4 year old DCC 1200 sufferred from a broken carafe, and we were worried the hot plate was going too because the coffee wasn’t very hot. We saw in a recent CR that the DCC1200 is the best, so we just bought a new one from Amazon. We got the dark chrome which is very nice and good for avoiding that dirty stainless steel look.

The interior design, where the water resevoir is, is different from our old one. I took it apart as a father-son project (how stuff works). They have improved the model over time, which is always a nice thing to see.

My advice to you is… we were happy enough to buy another one. We are happier with the performance of the new one.

Only complaint we’ve had is that it shuts off the burner before we’re ready… sometimes we want another cup of coffee AFTER 2 hours. If you hear the beep, just flip the on switch again, and your old coffee will stay hot for another 2 hours.

If you see any complaints here about older DCC1200 (3 or more years old) they will not be accurate as far as what you can buy today due to changes.
